Tatcha, the Japanese brand that was inspired by geisha centuries ago for their porcelain skin, took the beauty industry by storm with their famous Silk Canvas Protective Primer. However, the brand has recently launched another innovative version of the well-loved Silk Canvas Protective Primer that is also dominating the beauty world: The Liquid Silk Canvas: Featherweight Protective Primer.

The Liquid Silk Canvas Primer was inspired bintsuke, which was a thin layer of wax that the geisha would melt into their hands and massage onto their skin as the last step of their skincare rituals. By doing this, the geisha would create a smooth, poreless canvas for makeup, protect their skin, and allow their skin to hold onto moisture.

WHAT IS IT? 

The primer is described as a weightless, oil-free liquid primer that provides a protective barrier for the skin against pollutants and makeup. At the same time, the primer allows for a smoother and better application of makeup while allowing your makeup to last longer throughout the day. 

The featured ingredient of the Liquid Silk Canvas: Featherweight Protective Primer are the thin layers of silk (fibroin, sericin, and silk powder). The layers of silk work to diminish the look of pores, fine lines, and any imperfections of the skin which creates the perfect canvas before applying makeup.

Tatcha claims that the product is good for all skin types: normal, dry, oily, and combination. For reference, my skin is normal and becomes more normal/dry in the winter months. 

The following are the full claims of the product:

-Blurs: the silk extracts help to instantly diminish the look of pores, fine lines, and imperfections.

-Primes: the silk powder allows for the makeup to glide on more evenly and last longer while reducing any excess shine and leaving a soft focus finish to the skin.

-Protects: the unique blend of botanicals serve as a protective barrier between the makeup and your skin, helping to minimize the risk of clogged pores which can then lead to breakouts. The primer also contains "anti-pollution natural active ingredients" to help combat against any immediate attacks by  environmental stressors as well as helping to support the skin's natural barrier function to act against any future attacks. With the end goal of achieving visibly reduce fine lines and wrinkles. 

-Enhances: the primer also contains pink and gold pearls which help to even skin tone thus leaving your skin looking smooth, radiant, and healthy looking.

-Anti-aging: the product contains Hadasei-3 (a trinity of Japanese superfoods - green tea, rice, and algae) that work to visibly restore a youthful radiance to the skin.

HOW TO USE

Tatcha suggests that you use about 1 pump of the primer and massage onto the skin with fingers or apply with a flat brush. It is recommended that you use the primer after applying any SPF, but before applying any makeup. According to the brand, the product is multi-use, which means that it can double up as a primer for the face as well as the eyes. 

MY THOUGHTS

This primer is phenomenal! I don't think I have anything bad to say about this primer. It's very easy to apply. I found that using my fingers to smooth the primer onto my skin worked the best. The formula itself does not have that "silicone" feel to it nor does it feel "tacky" on your skin after application. Rather it feels more like a moisturizer that absorbs very quickly into the skin, which is the type of primer I usually lean towards. Upon application, the primer glides on ever so smoothly onto the skin and I did not notice any pilling happening. I also work 12 hour shifts and I am always looking for products that help keep my makeup looking flawless without me having to touch up throughout the day. With this, I found that my makeup did not breakup throughout the day and it did an excellent job at controlling my oils throughout the day. If you like a more matte look just like me, this product definitely helps with that. Although, don't forget that my skin is more normal and so I cannot really speak to how the primer would hold up for individuals with oilier skin. I found that the primer sat nicely underneath my makeup (made it looked airbrush) and I noticed that it evened out my skin tone as well. The formula does not feel heavy on the skin and I could notice the blurring of my pores and minor imperfections instantly. To top it off, I did NOT break out from using this new favourite, which is a big win-win in my books. Before this new primer launched, my go-to primer was the Benefit Proefessional. But now, the new Liquid Silk Canvas has made my top 3 and I will continue to use this product.
